Copper In Defence

Copper plays a major role in the defence and military industry due to its high conductivity, heat resistance, malleability, and ductility. A variety of Copper alloys are found in high-performance, high-pressure valves, pumps, shafts, bolting, flanges, couplings, steering mechanisms, and turret gears in tanks, aircraft undercarriage components, and periscopes. Certain Copper alloys are also used to create caps, connectors, couplings, enclosures, and housing for aircraft, switches, and lighting systems.

Aluminium in Defence

Aluminium is a big component of alloys used in aircraft, electrical systems and navigation radars. Due to Aluminium retaining lightweight properties, it allowed for lighter craft and better fuel management. In the military and defence sectors, precision castings are essential with tight tolerances. When it comes to materials for castings, Aluminium is broadly used in modern aircraft due to its effective properties. The key properties that make Aluminium significantly important to the sector include weight, strength, suitability to a cold environment, ability to alloy, easily machined, cost-effective and resistance to corrosion.

Commonly used Aluminium alloys in the defence/military sector:

  • Armoured vehicles- 5083, 7039
  • Military aircraft- 2024, 5052, 6061, 7075, 7050, 7068
