6082-T6 Drawn Tubing
The 6082- T6 drawn tubing is a medium strength alloy, with the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys, and has excellent resistance to corrosion. Alloy 6082 is classified as a structural metal. The alloy 6082 is the most typically used for machining in plate form. The increased strength of 6082 has seen it displace 6061 in numerous applications despite being a relatively new alloy. A large amount of manganese is added to control the grain structure, resulting in a stronger alloy.
In alloy 6082, producing thin-walled, complex extrusion forms is difficult. The extruded surface finish is not as smooth as other 6000 series alloys of equivalent strength.
Extruded tube: Formed by hot extruding through die available in seamless or structural grade product.
Drawn tube: Seamless extruded tube is brought to final size by drawing through die.
Some of the applications of 6082-T6 Tubing include
- Highly Stressed Applications
- Trusses
- Bridges
- Cranes
- Transport
- Ore Skips
The main difference between the two alloys is the cost. 6061 aluminium is much cheaper to manufacture and most readily available. Most manufacturers around the world choose 6061 alloys because the cost-performance is higher than the new 6082 aluminium.
